MASS CASUALITY DRILL AT QUINCY AIRPORT
Gadsden County EMS held a disaster drill at the Quincy Airport in March. All the volunteer departments took part. The incident was a simulated airplane crash with about 25 victims. The fire departments took turns providing first responder triage to the victims.

FIREFIGHTERS RECEIVE AED/CPR TRAINING RE-CIRTIFICATION
aed training 1

All the firefighters received AED/CPR training in the May training session. An AED is a Automated External Defibrillator, a device about the size of a laptop computer that analyzes the heart's rhythm for any abnormalities and, if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the victim. This shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm of its own. For some it was re-certification for others it was their first time using the AED and doing CPR. Certification is good for 2 years. All our trucks carry an AED.

Recently Lt. Hal Eassman form the Tallahassee Fire Department along with Don Harrison from the Genesis tool company gave a hands on training/demonstration of new extraction tools that are now in service by our department, as well as, other departments within the county. It was an excellent training class where two car were chopped up. Everyone got a chance, with expert instruction, to use the new tools.

Two Wetumpka Volunteers in Gadsden County Volunteer Firefighter Training
Gadsden County volunteer fireman braved a cold and windy day for drills in search and rescue and Extrication Techniques. Donning full bunker gear and using a blacked-out SCBA facemask to simulate heavy smoke conditions, students crawled on hands and knees searching for victims. In the afternoon session the volunteers had hands on training using extrication tools to remove victims trapped in damaged vehicles using hydraulic tools, jaws-of-life, cutters, rams and inflatable air bags. Students observed and participated in the use of each tool, cutting doorpost, removing roof and finally pushing back the dashboard to facilitate the safe removal of a victim.

This is part of an ongoing class taught at the Gadsden County Fire Service Coordinator’s facility on E. Jefferson St. Attending students were Bonnie & Irvin Newsome from Wetumpka as well as Nathaniel McNealy, Marshall Jones, Wash Hinson Jr. and Chief Dusty House from Robertsville VFD. Also in attendance were Matthew Powell and Clausell Stevens, (Unaffiliated).
