Arthur Crawford In WWII

  Arthur Crawford was a Tech 5 in the 4th Armored Division, 24th Armored Engineer Batallion, Company A. His Platoon Leader was a 1st Lt. named LaPatzie and his unit came in at Omaha Beach on Labor Day, September 3, 1944. Arthur was a machine-gunner on a 30 caliber machine gun mounted on a half-track personnel carrier. His unit was involved in the war throughout France, Belgium, and Czechoslovakia. In particular, his unit was involved in the "Belgian Bulge" (as he refers to it), and along with other units of the 4th Armored Division and units of the 1st Infantry Division (the Big Red 1) were the ones who broke through to the trapped 101st Airborne at the town of Bastogne, Belgium. This picture shows Arthur in front of the half-track and of particular interest in the Unit designation on the bumper. Arthur lived in his hometown of Morganton, GA with his wife Blanche and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 9, 2004. He was a member and Deacon in Concord Baptist Church and had been in retirement over 20 years after serving 28 years as a Rural Mail Carrier. He enjoyed hunting and camping as long as his health allowed it, however in early 2004 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and died at the age of 87 on November 24, 2004.
