2003 SHOW RESULTS

We have been involved with draft horses for a number of years previously but showing drafts in hitch classes has been a whole different ball game. After getting a taste of helping out another hitch we were bitten by the show bug. The last couple of years sure have been a great learning experience. This year we struck out to hit the big shows and it has been a grand adventure.

The Marion County Fair
June 19th, 2003
Judge: Dale Burger
The Marion County Fair is a smallish fair and a great way to start off the show season. The weather was outstanding with a temperate 75 degrees and a nice breeze to keep things just right. We only took 2 horses - Doug, the veteran on the show scene, and his young sidekick Barney. This was Barney's first show and were so proud of both their performances. A big thank you goes out to Butch Ruppert the Superintendent and his wife who were splendid hosts for the event. They went out of their way to make sure everything ran smooth. Thank you!
The Sanalac County Fair

What a turn out for the Fair in Sandusky MI on a hot July afternoon. Many Belgian, Percherons and even one Clyde hitch showed up to compete that day. This show consists only of hitch & farm team classes, no halter. The Thumb Draft Horse Association held a riding draft and a kids ground driving class held between a couple of the hitch classes. Fun was had by all! I would like to say a special thank you to the Thumb Draft Horse Association for going out of their way to put on those 2 extra classes which allowed young and draft riders to show off their horses. Both of the fun classes were well received by the crowd and I hope to see them return next year. I would also like to thank the superintendent for allowing the fun classes to be run in conjunction with the hitch classes.
The Huron County Fair
August 6th - 9th, 2003
Judge: Chuck Chestnut
The whole week was fun with many great draft horse people to make it so enjoyable. The Gehrings were great hosts of the event. Much fun was had by all putting on an impromptu draft riding and games competition for a small turnout of people after the halter classes on Friday. There were a total of 52 draft horses at the event.
The Genesee County Fair
August 10th - 13th, 2003
Judge: Jim Bellor
This event had a smaller turn out than the Huron and Sanalac Fairs. The weather was very hot and humid and taxing on all that were there. We are grateful to Ralph Warby of Warby Belgians for taking the time to share his knowledge and work with us to fine tune our turnout.
The Michigan Great Lakes International
October 16th - 19th, 2003
WOW, what a show the MGLI was for us. It was our first time at an A rated show let me tell you, it isn't just an A rated show - its one of the largest in the country. We competed hand in hand with so many great hitches and teamsters and were honored to be in the same ring as them. We went not expecting to do very well and hoping for a couple ribbons and are delighted beyond belief to be able to say that we place in every class we entered. To say that we are on cloud 9 is an understatement. We are so lucky to have 2 very fine horses that were able to step up to the plate and work so well for us. We are looking forward to next years show when we have a bit more experience under our belt.
