USS COBIA (SS-245) GATO-class fleet
submarine
In 1970, the Navy decommissioned COBIA and it was towed to Manitowoc, WI and has
been there since. It is now part of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and is on the
National Register of Historic Places. A few years ago it was moved to its
current spot from a few hundreds yards away. It is currently being restored
again. Manitowoc has a long history of building subs during WW2. Although Cobia
was not one of 28 subs built here it is similar to the ones that were.
