St. Marys City Council Post 6

"I want to make a difference"

ENERGY    ENTHUSIASM    EXCELLENCE

I have served on city council for the last four years and I would like to continue for another four.  I grew up in Clearwater Beach, Florida and I have seen what happens to a small community as it grows.  Prior to moving to St Marys fourteen years ago, I lived in Norwich, CT., Summerville, SC., Virginia Beach,VA. and Charlotte, NC. and currently work in Jacksonville.  So I have had a chance to see how it is in the large cities as well as the small.

I am an involved member of this community and I understand our needs. I am a wife, mother, homeowner, taxpayer, and consumer in St. Marys and Camden County.  I love living and raising my family here. I want St. Marys to continue to be the City we would all want to raise our families in for many years to come.

Prior to being elected I served on the board of directors of the SugarMill Plantation Owners Association for over 5 years.  I have served on several city committees, some as chairman and served one year as MayorProTem.  Currently I am the Property Committee Chairperson and I serve on the Public Safety – Police committee, Tourism (CVB) and Public Works Committee.  Additionally I serve on the Public Safety Committee and Transportation Committee for Georgia Municipal Association (GMA).  I am currently employed with the Federal Government at the Bankruptcy Court in Jacksonville.  I have been previously employed with Trident Technical College and Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

I will continue to work hard to make decisions that are in the best interest of our wonderful city and its citizens.  I have no hidden agenda to my platform, except to serve the people of St. Marys.  St. Marys doesn’t stop at downtown.  Our area has so much potential for quality and controlled growth.   Even in these slow economic times we must keep a watchful eye on how we grow because it will effect our future growth.  In order for this growth to be better controlled, we need better communication among the city and the citizens.  We need to all work together toward common achievable goals.

Not All Of The Issues, Just The Hot Issues

The future of the St Marys Airport:

I believe that the airport currently is a safety concern to the Naval Submarine Base.  It is not an issue of “if” but “when” an accident could happen.  There have been several cases of small plane accidents close to airports across the country, even here in St Marys.  Luckily they have not happened on the Subase.  Additionally, I do not believe that the airport can grow or be an economic engine at its present location.  It serves a very small number of our residents.  I have worked with the Airport Authority on their recent lease to keep the airport running until  the airport is moved to another location.  I do believe it is in the best interest of St Marys to move it or if it can’t be moved to close it.

Economic Development:

In these tough economic times we have to seek out ways to establish high quality businesses and jobs in our area. We are sitting ideally between Jacksonville and Brunswick and we have a lot to offer.  One of those ways is through Redevelopment Powers. Currently the city does not have Redevelopment Powers and it would take a vote of the people to give those powers to the city.  We have to look at public/private ventures to help us stand out that much further.  We have to work cooperatively with existing entities, like the Chamber of Commerce, Joint Development Authority, Industrial Development Authority and Downtown Development Authority.  Bringing in business is good for the residents of St. Marys.
