Departure details
Everyone taking the Van Galder bus to Chicago plan to
meet at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union on Langdon Street at
6:30 AM on Sunday, August 3. The bus departs at 7:00 AM. If
you miss the bus you can try to catch it before 7:15 AM at the Dutch
Mill Park and Ride at Highway 51 and Broadway. If you miss the bus
entirely, call Gordan F. at (See Roster) and see if they have room for you in
their van. Gordan and Ted F. are driving to Chicago separately. If
you miss the bus you must call Mark S on his cell phone (See Roster) and let him know what is going on.
Please don't miss the bus!
Money for transportation, etc
Bus transportation will cost $11 each way to and from Chicago and $10
each way to and from Raton to Philmont. This is a total of $42 per
person for bus transportation. In addition, bring sufficient money
to purchase food on the train (dinner and breakfast), fast food lunch in
Raton before we go to Philmont, souvenirs, treats, and laundry at
Philmont, dinner in Raton before boarding the train, breakfast and lunch
on the return train trip. I suggest a minimum of $100 and perhaps
more like $150. You can bring extra money back home!
Photo identification
Everyone must have a photo ID (driver's license, school ID, passport,
etc) in order to board the train. Also, put baggage labels with
your name and address on your backpack and carry-on bags.
What to wear
Everyone is expected to wear a class A uniform (khaki shirt and olive
shorts or pants) until we are on the train and underway. You may
then change into a Troop 104 class B uniform (olive tee shirt). At
Philmont we are expected to be in uniform (A or B) for meals and
similarly appearing as a crew.
Carry on items
Your backpack will go into the baggage car on the train. Please
bring a small carry-on bag for personal items, toiletries, clean
underwear, socks, travel pillow, travel blanket (optional, but it gets
cool on the train at night), book, snacks, etc. In this bag be
sure to pack clean clothes for the return trip. Consider bringing
some laundry detergent so you can wash your clothes when we get off the
trail and are back in base camp.
Train Security
If you bring valuable items on the train (electronics, cameras, etc) you
must guard these items carefully. Do not leave things in the open
on your seat. Lookout for each other!
Emergency contacts
Both Ken E and I will be carrying cell phones while we are in
transit to and from Philmont. You may call these numbers in an
emergency. Ken's number is: (See Roster) and Mark's is: (See
Roster). While we are at Philmont, in the event of emergency,
needing to reach us, call Philmont at (505) 376-2281.
The Emmerich/Frater's Crew is number 804K-2 on itinerary 20, the Lindau/Schroeder/Sorber
Crew is 804K-1 on itinerary 21.
See you on Sunday for the start of our exciting trip!
Cheers,
Mark
Itinerary:
Trip to Philmont:
We will meet at the UW Memorial Union, 800 Langdon
Street no later than 6:30 AM Sunday, August 3, 2003, to board the Van
Galder bus for the Chicago Amtrak Station. The bus departs at 7:00
AM.
The Van Galder bus arrives at the Chicago Amtrak
Station at Jackson and Canal at 11:15 AM. Bring a sack lunch to
eat at the station before you board the train.
The Amtrak departs Chicago at 3:15 PM. Bring
a valid photo ID, you will have to show it prior to checking baggage or
boarding the train. You may bring food for dinner, or plan to
eat in the dining car or snack bar on the train. The last time we
went, most people ate dinner in the dining car. Bring a small
overnight bag with a pillow, toiletries, small blanket or sleeping bag
liner and clean clothes for when we get off the trail.
The Amtrak arrives in Raton, New Mexico at 10:57 AM
on August 4, 2003.
We will be met at the train by a bus ($20/person
round trip, not yet paid) from Philmont. We will most likely eat
at a fast food restaurant in Raton before busing to Philmont.
Bring money to pay for your lunch.
Return Trip to Madison:
We will depart Philmont on a Philmont provided bus to
Raton after lunch on August 16.
The Amtrak train is scheduled to depart Raton at 5:38
PM and to arrive in Chicago at 3:20 PM on
August 17.
The Van Galder bus departs the Amtrak station at 4:15
PM and arrives in Madison at the Memorial
Union at 8:35 PM on August 17. If we miss the
4:15 PM bus, there is another one at 8:10 PM arriving at the Union
at 12:05 AM.

Crew - Itinerary #21
James D, Brian H, Cam L, Sammy P, Jim S, Kyle S, Andy SW, Abe S,
Jamie L, Mark S, Dave S
The 804K 1
Crew (that is the L/S/S Crew) has
received the following confirmation of our trek itinerary. Trek 21
is 63.73 miles long, has two layover days (days 5-6 and 9-10) with side
hikes and features burro packing starting on the third and ending on the
fifth day. Our trek takes us across both Baldy and the Tooth of Time. We
have one camp with no water nearby and the only showering opportunity will
be at Cimarronncito where we will be on nights nine and ten. We will
probably need a good cleaning by then.
Description:
The novel experience of burro packing is an early
feature of this itinerary, a means of travel no longer encountered in the
United States. You will also acquire some of the early day skills of
logging and gold mining, visit a mountain man rendezvous and see the view
from the top of Baldy Mountain. Scenic trail camps will be enjoyed
as well as challenge events, shotgun shooting and western lore. You
will be ready for a layover day at Cimarroncito with rock climbing,
environmental awareness and an inspiring side hike through Hidden
Valley. The last day will find you ascending Shaefers Peak and the
historic Tooth of Time. (This itinerary will pass through some of
the area burned by the 2002 Ponil Fire Complex.)
