This vintage radio is a WESTINGHOUSE WR-45 SEVEN TUBE modified
tombstone type. The chassis and schematic are identical to the
RCA 142, 242 and the G.E. M-81, The radio has be restored
functionally but not with original type components. It is
functional on the broadcast band and on at least one of the three
shortwave bands. The tube lineup is 6D6, 6A7, 6D6, 75, 76, two
42's and 5Z3. Schematics and some maintenance information is
included. The following are the deviations from full restoration: 1. There is no original tuning dial with frequency markings. 2. There are burn spots on the left and right sides of the cabinet as shown on the pictures. 3.
The control knobs are not original. They are modern knobs from
test equipment with holes in the center for dual shafts. There
are simulated wood decals placed over these holes. 3. The speaker is
a permanent magnet type instead of the original dynamic type. An
inductor was installed inside the chassis to take place of the
inductance of the electromagnet of the dynamic speaker. 4.
The output transformer is smaller than the original for the power
output capability of this radio. However the volume is more than
adequate for any normal home room. Sound is very good, but maybe
would be even better with the proper output transformer. 5. There is
considerable chassis rust as shown in the rear photo. Because of
this rust, I had to put a grounding wire on one of the tube shields to
prevent feedback. 6. The driver transformer for the pair of 42
output tubes has an open primary so it was changed to capacitor
coupling to the center tapped secondary 7. The power switch on the back of the tone control doesn't always turn off on the first try.. THIS IS A FINE CLASSIC RADIO FOR YOUR ROOM or for further authentic restoration.
