Kapliczka: (Polish) religious shrines that adorn country crossroads

location: Shantytown, south of Bevent
roadside oddity / religious shrine

This red brick shrine is at the intersection of County Road C, County Road J and Willow Avenue.

Better illustrated in Portage County, a practice that originated in Europe was brought to America by Polish immigrants.  Small religious shrines or chapels called Kapliczki (singular "Kapliczka") were built near the intersection of two roads at first to protect travelers from evil spirits and later to give thanks to God.  Some of central Wisconsin's Kapliczki are still evident in the forms of shrines and crosses.

Wisconsin Trails Magazine voted this park 'The Best Place to Picnic' in 1992. In addition to picnic facilities that include a playground and both an open-sided and a reservable log and stone enclosed shelter, there are miles of hiking trails, a rustic campground with 26 sites (16 have electricity), a group campground, and a swimming area on a quiet stretch of river away from the falls and rapids. The park is located on the Ice Age National Recreation Trail and also includes a state scientific area that features the unusual rock formations and associated riverine plant and animal communities."

The Haunted Fischer House

haunted
location:  Rothschild

This house was the inspiration for the movie "Poltergeist"...or was it?  Recent investigations dispute that idea, though the former owners stand by their strange account. (See Wausau Daily Herald links at right.)

"Accompanying the footsteps was a gradual increase in the ghostly activity.  A warm bath suddenly turned icy...lights flickered on in the middle of the night...and doors opened and closed of their own will.  Like the gradually increasing beat of a tribal drum, the house began to vibrate with the hauntings."
