"River Rat" Statue

location:  Merrill
roadside oddity

The old River Rat statue was more lifelike. The new statue stands in the same location as the old one.

"The river rat, or log driver, was responsible for getting logs from forest to mills.  During the drive, river rats rode the logs.  Using peavey, or pike poles, they pushed, pulled, and pried logs free.  Townspeople often lined the river banks to watch them at work.  The drives ended when the logs arrived at the mill booms."

"The Giant Spider Invasion"

location:  Merrill / Gleason
film location

The steel endoskeletons have been brought back into the public eye.

Little did you know that gargantuan arachnids once terrorized the residents of central Wisconsin, at least in the form of monsters in a B-movie from 1975.  That was when director and Lincoln County native Bill Rebane released his locally-filmed low-budget horror flick "The Giant Spider Invasion" upon the drive-in theaters of America.  Alan Hale Jr. (who of course played the Skipper in "Gilligan's Island") made an appearance as a sheriff in the film, so that should be good enough reason for you to seek out and rent this cult classic.  Mystery Science Theatre 3000 featured it on one of their shows, which is available on DVD.  In August 2008, the steel frames that made up the shape of the giant spiders were dug out of the weeds and put on display in downtown Merrill before being split up once again.  One skeleton is being restored in the town of Gleason while the other was destined to be sold on EBay.

one spider skeleton is located outside of:

and before being sold on EBay, the other was located at:

T.B. Scott Mansion

haunted / cursed
location:  Merrill

"In the 1850's white lumbermen were welcomed by the Indians and their chief. Some time later his daughter Jenny, for whom the settlement was named for died. On how she died is speculation. One account says she fell in love with one of the lumberman, became pregnant and killed herself. Another is, she died during child birth. Another is she died from flu brought by the white man. The chief buried her on the hill, and cursed the ground that it would never do any white man any good. The curse is the legend. Nine people died after T.B. Scott bought the land for a home in 1884 and died unexpectedly in 1886 before the house was finished. Within a year his wife Ann died. Their son Walter went to see the architect to finish the house. He was stabbed to death by him. In 1893 it was sold to a man named Kuechle. He lost all his money on a gold mine and mortgaged the house to Tony Barsanti. Tony foreclosed and Kuechle went insane and died in an asylum. The same year Barsanti was stabbed to death in Chicago while waiting for a train to Merrill. In 1901, George Gibson bought the house and went to inspect it. He was never seen again. In 1906, Mary Fellhaber bought the property. Soon after fell ill and died. Popcorn Dan was the caretaker and died in 1912 after booking passage on the Titanic. The next caretaker Mr. Lloydsen died of alcoholism. In 1919 the widower of M. Fellhaber gave the property to the city. In 1923 the city gave it to the Sisters of the Holy Cross who have seemed to break the curse for now. Rumors of ghost sightings in the tower."

Also seen shadows of dark figures and could not tell whether it was a man or woman or child or adult."

"Ghosts of America" Haunted Location Reports
(take with a grain of salt)

ghosts
location:  statewide

The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there.  Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.

"A female with worms crawling out of her nostrils can be witnessed very frequently on a dark night giving a piloted trip of Pine Dells to a party of ghosts. Lots of folks who live here assert this ghost is perhaps the stressed ghost of a person who used to live here in Merrill."

Father Menard Monument

location:  Merrill
historical mystery

Father Rene Menard, a 17th century missionary, disappeared while en route to visit an Indian tribe near Rib Lake via a canoe.  Encountering rapids, Father Menard stepped onto dry land before his guide safely navigated the waterway.  The guide walked back to retrieve the French missionary, but was unable to locate him.  Father Menard was never heard from again.  This monument was put in lace by the Knights of Columbus in 1923.

Some historians believe that the true location of Menard's disappearance was in Taylor County at the Goodrich Dells.
