Turkey-Themed
Hartwig's Gobbler Supper Club & Motel

location:  Johnson Creek
business with character

"The Gobbler Supper Club, the only one of its kind in all the world, was conceived to enhance the role of Tom Turkey as the all-American delicacy.  The building's rotunda design permits dramatic use of natural lava stone to simulate ruffled turkey feathers and windows form the 'eyes of the Gobbler'...A rotating bar that made a full circle every 80 minutes was the central feature of the building."

Haven Modern Motel

location:  Fort Atkinson
historical oddity

An old grouping of motel cabins sits abandoned in the weeds, looking like they were transported from the dusty roadsides of Route 66.  Actually, they were once visited by guests such as Ozzie & Harriet, the Von Trapp Family Singers, Joe Louis and the ambassador to Australia.  A few years ago, you couldn't find anything about this place on the net, but now it's become a photographer's mecca.

location:  Lake Mills

picture courtesy of Science Frontiers Online

These are two books on the subject which are available via the links to the right.

"...beneath the surface of Rock Lake lie at least ten structures. Two of these have been mapped and photographed by skin divers and sonar. Structure #1, which has been dubbed the Limnatis Pyramid, has a base width of 60 feet, a length of about 100 feet, and a height of 18 feet, although only about 10 feet protrude from the silt and mud. It is a truncated pyramid, built largely out of round, black stones. On the truncated top, the stones are squarish. The remains of a plaster coating can be discerned."

museum

This museum contains an exhibit dedicated to Rudolph "Rud" Smith's barber shop, which was once called (by Rud himself) the World's Most "Beautiful Barber Shop".

"The home of the Palmyra Historical Society features local WWII artifacts among its many exhibits of local and area interest. The Carlin House was a gift from Fisk Carlin, the descendant of two prominent pioneer families, the Welds and the Carlins. The Octagon House

America's First Kindergarten

location:  Watertown
museum / historic site

"The five-story Octagon House is one of the largest single family residences of the pre-Civil War period in Wisconsin. Completed in 1854, the house was designed by John Richards, a Watertown pioneer. Its original construction includes central heating, running water and a ventilating system. A spiral staircase rises from the first floor to the tower room, or cupola. The Watertown Historical Society opened it as a museum in 1938; it previously served as the Richards family residence. Watertown was the site of the first kindergarten in the United States, started in 1856 by the German educator Margarethe Meyer Schurz. 100 years later the kindergarten building was moved by the Watertown Historical Society to its current site."
