Remnants of the Big Sawdust Pile

 

location:  Chippewa Falls
historical oddity

"This sawdust deposit is remnant of the huge pile of sawdust and shavings that accumulated between 1885 and 1911 from the finishing of millions of feet of white pine lumber in the Planing Mill located in the old lumberyard (known as the 'Flats')...This is considered 'Hallowed ground' by many who played here as youngsters between 1895 and 1950."

Irvine Park Cave

"Schmitmayer enlarged the cave, which had a natural spring and closed the entrance with an iron gate. The hole in the cave's ceiling was the bottom of a shaft dug down from the top near Jefferson Avenue. Beer was lowered down and stored in the cool cave."

Owner Jim Bloms says it's all in what you believe. Former Sheeley House owner Joel Seidlitz, who now works for Bloms as a bartender, said he is convinced something strange has been happening in the bar and restaurant for years."
