10 Named Staircases

location:  Alma
urban oddity

"Alma has 10 steep staircases that connect Main Street with Second Street. Each is identified by a street sign and provides an excellent source of exercise while enjoying the scenery."
- section from the Alma official site

As you drive through Alma, you may catch a glimpse of a shop or restaurant you wish to investigate.  Too late, you just passed it.  Let's just go around the block so I can park right in front of that store, you think.  So, you spot a street sign up ahead and flip on your turn signal.  As you execute the turn onto what you thought was a side street, a jolt of realization hits you like a ice-packed snowball: I'm driving up a pedestrian staircase.  This and many more sensations are available in beautiful Alma.

"Bartholomew Rudd's Christmas Guest"

ghost
location:  Fountain City

In 1866, a man was followed home from church by the sounds of footsteps in the snow.  Reaching his destination without further incident, he discovered an old friend waiting for him in his house, where the two talked and ate until the wee hours of morning.  The next day the man was shocked to find the guest room his friend was to stay in obviously unused and his friend's meal still on the plate, untouched.  Then he received the telegram...
