Welcome to the world’s foremost authoritative source for the FBM
Deduction (also called the Boomer Deduction, SSBN Deduction, and the Two
Crew Submarine Deduction).
This site is the leading and most respected Internet location for information, worksheets, questions, and answers about the TRIDENT Submarine
Sailors Tax Deduction.
No more Housing and Meal Deduction! New information from the IRS and the Navy Judge Advocate Office - Your deduction for meals and housing must be offset by your BAS and BAH! That is right, no more major deductions! The form and worksheet have been updated per the new information. The IRS is scrutinizing all deductions this year and they seem to be hacking away at this one big time. I guess someone has to pay for the war effort. Details: You receive non-taxable BAH and BAS and therefore you can not deduct your housing cost or meals from your taxes. Reference:JAG Information Paper
Beginners:
You must fill out Form 2106-EZ
-Employee Business Expenses, to claim the FBM Deduction (sometimes called the
Boomer Deduction). To do this, you must itemize your tax deductions.
This means you will be filing IRS Form 1040
(not the EZ form), and you must have enough deductions to beat the standard
deduction (Single $5,450.00 - Married $10,900.00). This
usually means you need to live off-base. If you have never done a
FBM deduction before, ask around in the office to see who can assist
you. Usually everyone that lives off base fills out the form (or
VITA does it for them) to see if it helps there tax situation.
See
my beginners section for
detailed information to assist beginners.
VITA
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - Your base
legal or family services office usually set up a tax office to assist
military and their families during tax season. You can print out the FBM
deduction worksheet and they can fill it out for you. Usually they have
there own version of the form. You can also refer them to this website
for my version.
