Great-grandfather, Lacy Barbe was a surveyor as well as a farmer in Virginia. During the Civil War he served as a
private in the 63rd Regiment (McMahon's) VA Infantry,
Company B, C.S.A. He was captured by union
forces February 13, 1865 in Orangeburg, SC, a location now memorialized by the
Edisto Memorial Gardens. A force of less than 600 confederate soldiers temporarily halted the advance of the Union Army, but were later outflanked by a much larger union
force. The remaining defenders were compelled to withdraw. Lacy Barbe was released June 23, 1865 at Point Lookout, MD. His first home was in Mendota, VA then near
Livingston Creek, Washington Co, VA.
