SETI@Home

This is a really interesting little piece of software developed by the super scientific folks at SETI. Because their Radio telescope sucks in Gigabytes worth of data every day, they can't process it all with the computers available to them. Enter the age of Massive Parallel Internet Based Computing (it's just some acronym I think I saw somewhere). When you run this software as a screensaver it grabs a piece of information from their Web site (about 340k...not big even for modem users) and starts processing it. They need your help! So far, average people like you and I (and some colleges and foundations) have saved them several THOUSAND YEARS of computing time!! All this from letting your computer do something when you're not using it anyway!! I've processed over 350 "work units" already.

Update: The new software (BOINC)is a more generic form that is being used by other scientific projects, so now you can help lend your unused time to biomedical or climate study projects!
