1996-2002: Yellowknife

I returned to the Arctic in 1996 after a four-year absence, lured by an offer of a lucrative one-month contract filling an empty slot on the Northern News Services editing desk in Yellowknife. One month turned into three and half years, interrupted by a second undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia.

My duties in Yellowknife included, at one time or another, assignment, copy editing and overseeing design and layout of several community papers, namely the twice-weekly Yellowknife, and the weekly Inuvik Drum, Deh Cho Drum, Kivalliq News and three zoned editions of the weekly News/North. It was essentially a daily news operation.

During the my last year with NNSL, I eased into half-time duties, the better to pursue freelance work as a science journalist. My work soon appeared in the North's premiere magazine, Up Here, as well as Southam News, the Vancouver Sun, New Scientist and other clients.
