SENIOR PATROL LEADER

Description:      Top youth leader in the Troop.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:     Must be a minimum of Star Rank.  May not hold another position (elected or appointed) during their term of office.  National Youth Leadership Training experience highly recommended.

Reports to:      Scoutmaster   

Duties:  Runs all Troop meetings, Patrol Leader’s Conferences (PLC), events, activities, and the annual program planning conference

bullet Delegation is the main job of the Senior Patrol Leader  
bullet Is responsible for scheduling meetings and making sure all are in attendance  
bullet Organizes and chairs all Troop Meetings and Patrol Leader’s Conference Meetings.  Keeps the meetings on track.   Arrives early to direct setup  
bullet Perfect attendance is essential   
bullet Should feel comfortable standing up in front of people and talking LOUD  
bullet Organizes and chairs Patrol Leaders' Council meetings  
bullet Will meet with the Scoutmaster ahead of time to compile the meeting agenda  
bullet Assigns duties and responsibilities to the Patrol Leaders and youth Contact Leaders  
bullet Needs to know WHAT needs done so he can decide WHO has to do it  
bullet Has working knowledge of leadership skills and should help other youth leaders by sharing these skills on an informal basis
bullet Oversees the youth positions of: Assistant SPLs and all Patrol Leaders
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly


 

ASSISTANT SENIOR PATROL LEADER of SERVICE

Description:      Second-highest youth leader.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Must have served a full term as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, or Scribe.  Must be a minimum of First Class Rank.  May not hold another position (elected or appointed) during their term of office.

Reports to:      Senior Patrol Leader

Duties:  

bullet Helps the Senior Patrol Leader run Troop meetings and activities, plus runs the Troop in the absence of the Senior Patrol Leader  
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council and attends as an assistant to the Senior Patrol Leader  
bullet Must help to enforce and support what the Senior Patrol Leader decides or does  
bullet Must set an example of “following the leader” to encourage others to do so  
bullet Oversees the youth positions of: Librarian, Historian, Chaplin’s Aid, Bugler, Scribe, Quartermaster, and OA Troop Rep.
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

 

 


 

ASSISTANT SENIOR PATROL LEADER of PROGRAM

Description:      Second-highest youth leader.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Must have served a full term as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, or Scribe.  Must be a minimum of First Class Rank.  May not hold another position (elected or appointed) during their term of office.

Reports to:      Senior Patrol Leader

Duties: 

bullet Helps the Senior Patrol Leader run Troop meetings and activities, plus runs the Troop in the absence of the Senior Patrol Leader  
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council and attends as an assistant to the Senior Patrol Leader  
bullet Must help to enforce and support what the Senior Patrol Leader decides or does  
bullet Must set an example of “following the leader” to encourage others to do so  
bullet Oversees all “programming” (events) of the troop such as: campouts, outings, activities, and Court of Awards
bullet Works closely with any Youth Contact Leaders to assist in event planning: reviews menu selections and completes tour permits at least one week prior to events.
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly


 

LIBRARIAN

Description:      Maintains and makes available the Troop library.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Scout Rank or Higher

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Duties:

bullet Keeps records of books and pamphlets owned by the Troop as the “Troop Library”
bullet Adds new or replacement items as needed  
bullet Brings to the library to every Troop meeting  (so books and pamphlets available for borrowing)
bullet Keeps a system for checking out Troop literature  
bullet Follows up on late returns  
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council  
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

HISTORIAN

Description:      Responsible for taking photos of activities for the troop photo website, gathering articles and information for website, and maintaining the historical records.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Scout Rank or Higher

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Duties:

bullet Takes photos at Troop activities
 
bullet Maintains photo albums and other historical items
 
bullet Gathers articles and prepares information troop photo album
 
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

 

SCRIBE

Description:      Keeps track of Troop Meeting minutes.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Scout Rank or Higher

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Duties:

bullet Attends and keeps a log of Troop Meetings and Patrol Leaders’ Council meetings
 
bullet Keeps the minutes of those meetings to be published for reference.  Troop meeting minutes are sent Mrs. Fitzwater to update the webpage.  PLC Meeting minutes are sent to the Scoutmaster.
 
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

 

CHAPLAIN’S AIDE

Description:      Helps Troop to remember that “A Scout is Reverent.”  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Scout Rank or Higher

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Duties:

bullet Leads opening prayers before Troop meetings, courts of honor, and other special Troop ceremonies and before meals on outings.
 
bullet Keeps Troop leaders aware of religious holidays and events when planning activities.
 
bullet Tells Troop members about and assist with religious emblem programs.
 
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly  

 

BUGLER

Description:      Responsible for bringing the troop bugle to events.  Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Scout Rank or Higher

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Duties:

bullet Plays Revile in the morning and Taps at night to signify lights out
bullet Gathers tired flags until retirement ceremony.  Plans and carries out retirement ceremony.
 
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

 

OA TROOP REPRESENTATIVE

Description:      Elected by Scouts.

Prerequisite:      Under 18 years old, OA Member in good standing

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Description:      An OA Troop Representative is the connection between the local OA lodge and his Troop. 

Duties:

bullet Attends troop meetings to give “OA Moment” at the end of every meeting.
 
bullet Encourages year round camping, older Scout participation in high adventure programs, community service projects, and participation in OA activities
 
bullet Encourages Arrowmen in the Troop to seal their membership in the Order by becoming Brotherhood members and assists with OA elections
 
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly.

 


 

TROOP QUARTERMASTER

Description:      Elected by Scouts, with approval of SPL & Scoutmaster

Prerequisite:      None. Must be able to tow AND stow trailer, preferably indoors

Reports to:      Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Service

Description:      A Troop Quartermaster is responsible for keeping the troop trailer in satisfactory condition, both inside and out. 

Duties:

bullet Selects an Assistant Quartermaster who can share in Quartermaster duties.
bullet Knows what is in the trailer and where to find it. 
bullet Maintains list of what’s in the trailer and keeps it clean and ready for each outing
bullet Instructs other scouts proper trailer etiquette i.e. quartermaster or adult leader in the trailer only unless permission granted – to help keep trailer orderly
bullet Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders’ Council
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

TROOP ASSISTANT QUARTERMASTER

Description:      Appointed by Quartermaster, with approval of SPL & Scoutmaster

Prerequisite:      None

Reports to:      Troop Quartermaster

Description:      A Troop Assistant Quartermaster is responsible for helping the Quartermaster in keeping the troop trailer in satisfactory condition, both inside and out. 

Duties:

bullet Assists the Quartermaster in keeping the trailer clean and ready for each outing
bullet Knows what is in the trailer and where to find it
bullet Instructs other scouts proper trailer etiquette i.e. quartermaster or adult leader in the trailer only unless permission granted – to help keep trailer orderly
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly


 

JUNIOR ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER

Description:  Serves in the capacity of an Assistant Scoutmaster except where legal age and maturity are required.  Appointed by Scoutmaster.

Prerequisite:  Demonstrated leadership skills in previous positions.  Has completed or is close to completing the Rank of Eagle Scout or a term as Senior Patrol Leader.

Reports to:  Scoutmaster

Duties:

bullet Functions as an Assistant Scoutmaster
 
bullet Performs duties as assigned by the Scoutmaster
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly


 

PATROL LEADER

Description:      Elected leader of the patrol. Represents patrol in Patrol Leaders’ Council.

Prerequisite:      None

Reports to:      Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Advisor

Duties:

bullet Represents the patrol in the Patrol Leaders’ Council.  
bullet Is responsible for meeting objectives set by the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet Must get patrol’s feelings on something BEFORE going to the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet Plans and steers patrol meetings.  Attendance is mandatory
 
bullet Must run patrol meetings both in and out of Troop meetings.  Outside patrol meetings are not required, but may be necessary
 
bullet Keeps patrol members informed by communicating with them weekly
 
bullet Knows the resources and the needs/characteristics of his patrol by TALKING with patrol members
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly


 

ASSISTANT PATROL LEADER

Description:      Elected assistant leader of the patrol.

Prerequisite:      None

Reports to:      Patrol Leader and Patrol Advisor

Duties:

bullet Represents the patrol in the Patrol Leaders’ Council upon request of the Patrol Leader. 
bullet Is responsible for meeting objectives set by the Patrol Leaders’ Council
 
bullet Assists in planning and steering patrol meetings upon request of the Patrol Leader
 
bullet May run patrol meetings both in and out of Troop meetings.  Outside patrol meetings are not required, but may be necessary
 
bullet Helps keep patrol members informed
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly

 

DEN CHIEF

Description:  Works with a Cub (or Webelos) Den and their Den Leader in the Cub Scout Pack.  Appointed by Senior Patrol Leader, approved by Scoutmaster.

Prerequisite:  None, but complete online training session.

Reports to:  Den Leader and Scoutmaster

Duties:

bullet Knows the purposes of Cub Scouting
 
bullet Helps Cub Scouts advance through Cub Scout ranks
 
bullet Encourages Cub Scouts to join a Boy Scout Troop upon graduation
 
bullet Assists with activities in the den meeting and pack meetings
 
bullet As with all other Junior Leaders:  Actively participates in Troop activities, sets a good example, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows Scout Spirit, and enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly


 

TROOP GUIDE

Description:  Works with new Scout patrol.  Helps them feel comfortable and earn their First Class rank in their first year.  Appointed by Senior Patrol leader, approved by Scoutmaster.

Prerequisite:  None  Preferred Rank of Life or Eagle.

Reports to:  Patrol Advisor and Scoutmaster

Duties:

bullet Introduces new Scouts to Troop operations
 
bullet Guides new Scouts through early Scouting activities
 
bullet Shields new Scouts from harassment by older Scouts
 
bullet Helps new Scouts earn First Class rank in their first year
 
bullet Teaches basic Scout skills
 
bullet Coaches the Patrol Leader of the new Scout patrol on his duties
 
bullet Works with the Patrol Leader at Patrol Leaders’ Council meetings
 
bullet Attends Patrol Leaders’ Council meetings with the Patrol Leader of the new Scout patrol
 
bullet Assists the Patrol Advisor with training
 
bullet Counsels individual Scouts on Scouting challenges

SPEECH GUIDELINES

Maximum of two minutes.

Be Loud!  Be Clear!  Articulate!  Stand Up Straight!

bullet State your name.
 
bullet State the position you are running for.
 
bullet Tell a little about yourself (number of years in scouts, your current rank).
 
bullet Give reason(s) why you should be elected to that particular position.
 
bullet Tell about your past positions and experiences that would better enable you to perform the position well.
 
bullet Tell experiences that show you know how the troop operates in certain situations, such as campouts and service projects.
 
bullet Tell if you have received leadership training, what course/s and when.

TROOP 324 YOUTH LEADERSHIP POSITION REQUIREMENTS

To start position...

bullet Scout shall sign responsibilities agreement.

To maintain position...

bullet Scout shall attend 75% of Troop activities.

Activities are Troop Meetings, Courts of Honor (Troop and Eagle), Service Projects, Troop Fundraisers (excludes fundraisers for Scout’s campfunds), Camporees/Campouts/Outings

Since some activities do not require youth leadership to attend, it will be at the discretion of the Scoutmaster as to which activities count towards this requirement.  If, for some reason, a Scout determines he cannot meet the 75% requirement, he must either obtain an exception from the Scoutmaster or relinquish his position.

To qualify for rank advancement....

bullet Scout shall have the position requirement for a rank advancement signed by the Scoutmaster or an Assistant Scoutmaster to verify job was completed to the best of scout’s ability.
