Our Product has Ephedra, which is an extract of Ephedrine. Ephedrine, the purest form, is not in our product. Our Product contains (Ephedra-5 mg. Per capsule)- (8% of 490 mg.)  It is our understanding that Ma Huang (Ephedra) does not have any current restrictions in the United States, although the pure substance Ephedrine (the active Compound of Ma Huang) is restricted in some states. The status could change in the future.

The FDA'S "official" position is that most of the Ma Huang energy/weight control formulations do not tell you how much Ephedrine they contain, and thus the consumer has no why to know what a safe usage level is for these products. This is supposed to apply to all Ephedrine containing herbs-not just Ma Huang.

The FDA has guidelines concerning the labeling of products that contain Ma Huang and/or Ephedrine. You must list the amount of ephedrine present in each tablet/capsule along with the following precautionary labeling:

Adults and children 13 years of age and over: Oral dosage is 12.5 to 25 milligrams every 4 hours, not to exceed 150 milligrams in 24 hours, or as directed by a doctor. Do not exceed recommended dose unless recommended by a doctor. (This would be in addition to the high blood pressure and pregnancy/action warnings already listed).

The Natural Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) and the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) have also released an expanded label recommendation that would replace the current high blood pressure and pregnancy/action warnings already being used:

"Seek advice from a health care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have high blood pressure, heart or thyroid disease, diabetes, difficulty in urination due to prostate enlargement, or if taking an MAO inhibitor or any other prescription drug. Reduce or discontinue use if Nervousness, tremor, sleeplessness, loss of appetite or nausea occur. Not for the use of Children under 13. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

The FDA has not officially recognized the NNFA/AHPA as of this date, although the more expanded the label warnings are, the less able the FDA is to damage a company selling an ephedrine containing product.
