xFiles xFiles

xFiles allows you to change the HFS+ type and creator, filename, Posix owner and group, modification date, and permissions of files you drop on it. It also includes a File List document, for easy preview, editing and modification of files located around your mounted drives. An HFS+ Catalog Search allows you to build File Lists based on several HFS+ criteria.

File Info Window
The file info window allows you to change many attributes of a file, including both Posix and HFS+ attributes.

Change will set the attributes of the currently loaded file and display the next file in the list.
Change All will apply the current attributes to all of the loaded files.
Skip will skip to the next file in the list.

File Lists
xFiles can save references to lists of files located anywhere on a mounted drive.

Located at the top of the File List window are several buttons:

File Info: Opens a
File Info window for the files selected in the list.
Reveal: Reveals the first selected file in the Finder.
Launch: Launches the selected files with their default applications. Double-clicking on a file in the list will accomplish the same thing.
Edit Text: Opens the selected files in TextEdit.app.
Remove: Removes the selected files from the list.
Add Files: Allows you chose multiple files/directories and add them to the list document. You may also just drag files from the Finder and drop them into the window.

All of the above operations may also be performed by a contextual menu.

If you expand the lower portion of the split view, you can see a preview of text and images files. The list of text and image file types accepted for preview can be modified in the preferences dialog.

HFS+ Catalog Search
The CatSearch window allows you to search files using many different HFS+ attributes, including modification date, file type and creator. Results are returned in a File List window.

Tips
I have a File List document that contains documentation files from various packages I've installed, creating sort of a 'master index' of .html and .pdf files scattered in many places.

I have another one that has several configuration files (such as apache.conf) which allows me to easily edit them with TextEdit.app (not that I have anything against Emacs, but...).

Both the File List and File Info windows accept files dropped from the Finder.

Registration

xFiles is a shareware product.
The cost is $20 per machine.

I'm of the opinion that people will either pay shareware fees, or they won't.
You may use xFiles without registering it until you feel that it is worth $20 to you.

If you like xFiles, you should pay the shareware fee to help ensure future development of the product.

Please visit my order page to register xFiles.
