It's that time again..
Thor and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hope all is well with you this year. Although I'm not real big on holidays in general I think that Christmas is one of the holidays that I acknowledge more than the rest, but I'm not quite sure why. Part of it has to do with just being politically correct.. Everyone just says it.. Merry Christmas!, Happy Holidays!, Seasons Greetings! or whatever..
In most ways it would just be another day for me. However it's not just another day because everything comes to a stop today. Stores for the most part are closed. The roads are basically quiet, everyone with a normal life is home or at relatives spending the day with family. It's the one day that society actually slows down.
When I was growing up my parents always did a big open house. My mother would spend the day before Christmas and most of Christmas day cooking. She would set up a small buffet on the dining room table and then all day long people would straggle in and visit. There was food and holiday music. Coffee and/or alcohol was consumed while everyone talked and caught up with stories. Always the same ritual.
By the end of the day it was always the same scenario.. the ones just passing through were long gone and we were left with the regulars. My mom and step father, Ron of course along with his parents and my aunt Ruth and her husband Miles. Then there was my Grandma on my mothers side and her brother Dave, who I'm named after, his girlfriend and his son. By this point Miles was usually toasted and rather loud. I always thought it was funny as he got obnoxious and my aunt Ruth would keep giving him sideways glances and snapping at him.
Overall though as a kid it was rather boring. As an adult I look back and miss it somewhat. But that was then and this is now. Things change.
Today my Mom and Ron are at their Donner Lake house, my Dad and step mother, Louise are at their home in Weaverville. My daughter who is 18 now is at her home in San Jose and I don't know where everyone else is.
I'm sitting in my trailer with Thor waiting for my laundry to dry. Just another day for me.. almost.Labels: Holidays |
