y great great grandfather, Jesse Pepper came from Anderson Co., SC.

Both my great great grandfathers, Jesse Pepper and Eaton Mabry owned land in S36 T22 R10E. Jesse Pepper owned the NEĽ of S36 T22 R10E and Eaton Mabry owned the SEĽ of S36 T22 R10E. Eaton also owned 160a. joining, what is now, Webster Co., MS.

A tremendous amount of work has been done on the Pepper family by Jack Pepper who descends from Samuel Pepper, my Jesse Pepper's brother. Also, my cousin Sarah Margaret Few Hallum, a descendant of my Jesse has done a lot of work on the Pepper line. Below is some information that Jack and Sarah have shared with me.

My Jesse Pepper's parents were John and Elizabeth Oldham Pepper. My Jesse's paternal grandparents were Samuel and Elizabeth Ann "Lady" Holton. Jesse Pepper's maternal grandparents were Richard Oldham and Elizabeth Bayse.

Jack Pepper wrote: The earliest Pepper that we have connected to this family is Samuel Pepper, who was born in 1725 in the area that became Prince William County, VA a few years later. He acquired land in Fauquier Co., VA in 1763 and his name appears on a petition to be allowed to worship in a Baptist Church. No date, but 1777 has been the best estimate. With some of his family he moved to Kentucky in 1797. One of his sons is credited with establishing the first whiskey distillery in that state. His son, John, moved to Caswell Co., NC, apparently with his in-laws the Oldhams. John, as well as most of his Oldham brothers-in law participated in the Revolutionary War, particularly, the Battle of Gilford Courthouse, near their home. A John and a William Pepper immigrated to Lancaster Co., VA in the early 1650s. It is logical that one, or both, of these were the ancestor of our Samuel, but more research is needed to establish any connection. Records fail to show the origin of these "immigrant" Peppers, but there have been attempts to connect them to the Peppers and Oldhams, who were in Massachusetts 100 years earlier.

Sarah Margaret Few Hallum wrote:Jesse Pepper came to Choctaw County, MS in the 1830's along with his brother John and sister Elizabeth and brother-in-law, George T. Anderson. He appears on a tax roll for Choctaw County for 1835, which seems to be the first surviving one for that county. Jesse Pepper is not listed by name on the State census of Choctaw, but he is almost certainly the extra male age 21-45 in George Anderson's household. Jesse Pepper was a schoolteacher. Among keepsakes remaining in the hands of descendants is his arithmetic book which he wrote to use in teaching. It opens with the list of rules for his school. Just how long he taught and where all his schools were located are not known. Family information indicates he taught in South Carolina as well as Mississippi. Jesse Pepper is not listed on the 1840 census in either Choctaw or Chickasaw County. But in 1841, the year he and Matilda (Moon) Payne married, he appears for the first time on a Chickasaw County tax roll. The location of his house place is known precisely, located in the Northwest Quarter of Section 36, Township 22, Range 10 East of what at that time was still a part of Chickasaw, but which became a part of Calhoun County in March of 1852.

Sarah Margaret Hallum owns our Jesse Pepper's bible which is covered with deer skin.

I, Beverly Mabry Hannaford, own and treasure Jesse Pepper's arithmetic book. 1826 SC is written in the book. Below are Jesse Pepper's hand written school rules.
