Bump Keys Fact or Myth?

“Bump Keys” are a FACT and are the largest threat to your security!!!

What is a “Bump Key” and how do they work?

Most Standard five and six pin tumbler locks can be opened through a quick and easy technique known as “Bumping”.

(Some “High Security Locks” can also be opened utilizing this technique).

The diagrams below show how a “Bump” key operates in a standard residential, commercial or industrial pin tumbler locks.

This simple technique requires that the key be inserted and then withdrawn by one tumbler position (@ .25mm) and then “Bumped” into the lock, using a stick, screwdriver handle or other striking implement of the would be thief’s choosing.

This causes the Bottom Pins to “Bump” into the Top Pins causing them to bounce and separate from the Bottom Pins creating a gap or a false shear-line, which will allow the lock to turn.

Why is this a threat?

A “Bump” key can be made from any key that fits into a particular pin tumbler lock and that has been modified so that all of it’s cuts are to the deepest allowable position as defined by it’s manufacturer. The word “fit” as used above means that the key will enter the lock but will not turn it.

For example if you live in a large apartment complex, or work in a large office building, your key will fit into your neighbors lock but will not unlock it. Conversely their key will fit into your lock but not unlock it. Any key for any apartment or office in this example could be easily modified to act as a “Bump Key” and then be used to open any other door within the complex.

Many websites have sprung up in response to this information being first published on the inter-net (Here at this link>http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5177213949300140850) and then the national news media.

Some web sites will actually sell pre-cut “Bump” keys for specific brands of locks.

(Check out http://www.bumpkey.us/)

“Bumping” is a real threat because it does not require any special skills or tools.  Therefore the vast majority of pin tumbler locks are at risk!

Most residential, commercial and industrial properties rely solely upon pin tumbler locks!

“Bumping” can be learned quickly and requires no skill or special training. A would-be burglar or mischief maker can “case” a business or residence then go directly to a hardware store and purchase a “Blank” key for your lock brand and utilizing a simple metal file can cut their own key.

Alternately they can easily purchase a lock from a hardware store or mega-retailer, make a bump key for it and practice until he/she gains proficiency at “Bumping”.  Easier still he/she can purchase pre-cut “Bump Keys” from many inter-net sources as specified above.

In any case any would-be burglar armed with personally made or professionally cut “Bump Keys” will in all likelihood be able to open the lock(s) and gain access. If the perpetrator has acquired any skill at the technique he/she can be in and out within seconds and in a minimum of time and re-lock the entry door behind them.

Most homeowner’s insurance policies will not pay for any loss suffered from a “Bump Key” break-in.

In all cases it would depend upon your company’s policy but in general, proof of forced entry must be evident. Many policies exclude mysterious disappearance, and there is generally no forensic indications of “Bump Key” entry and no apparent damage to the lock(s) may result.
