Furniture Safety
Help us help others make their homes safer
H.R. 1861, the Katie Elise & Meghan Agnes Act
H.R. 1861 calls for the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue furniture safety standards including warning labels on all at risk furniture and electronics warning the consumer of the risk of serious injury and/or death to children and that appropriate safety straps be sold with the furniture/electronics, all with the goal of reducing the risk of injury and death to children as a result of furniture tip-overs. There is no such legislation currently. This bill will first be reviewed by a Congressional Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
Consumer Product Safety Commission's Voluntary Furniture Safety Standards
In addition, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is CURRENTLY REVIEWING the voluntary furniture safety standards. We would like them to improve these safety standards as well as make them MANDATORY .
You can support these efforts by:
1. Sign the online petition for HR 1861. We would like as many signatures as possible on that petition.
2. Write to the CPSC Chairman, Nancy Nord to urge her to IMPROVE and make MANDATORY the current voluntary furniture tipping standard (ASTM-2057). This could be a much quicker way to improve the situation rather than waiting years for this to get through as a bill.
